Top Wrestling MVPs 2020

Hi guys, How crazy has 2020 has been? With everything going on in the world, it seems as if 2021 couldn't come any sooner. However, even with all of this negativity, I think it's vital to try and find some positives.  Despite conditions making it hard for the wrestling industry, many companies have thrived during the pandemic. In particular, some wrestlers have managed to make the best out of a bad situation and continue trying to put on shows for fans whether in person or through streaming sites.  To mark the end of another year, I'm back with my annual wrestling MVP list of the wrestlers who have stood out this year. Just a quick note, most of the stuff I've watched this year is Japanese wrestling (NJPW, DDT and TJPW)! Yuka Sakazaki 2020 has been a great year for in the sense that I've had the time to fully get into Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling. For me, it's something I regret not doing earlier because it is full of some amazing wrestlers from Miu, Miyu Yamashita...

NJPW: The New Beginning Sapporo Review

Image
Hi guys, So it's been more than a month since Wrestle Kingdom and time has seemed to fly by with Fantastica Mania and now the New Beginning's tour (obviously with the Road to shows as well). There's been a lot of matches on this tour that have been being built up since New Year's Dash and my mouth was watering just thinking about them like Taiji Ishimori v Taguchi for the IWGP Jr Heavyweight title and of course Switcblade Jay White challenging for the IWGP Heavyweight title against the champ Hiroshi Tanahashi. But, because the tour's been so big and so many things have happened, I'm going to have a look solely at the New Beginning Sapporo leg of the tour and then look at the Osaka leg in the next post. So, I hope you enjoy my look at The New Beginning tour from the 'Road To' tour to the main shows in Sapporo. The New Beginning (Sapporo) The Road to New Beginnings Tour, which led up to The New Beginning in Sapporo on the 2nd and 3rd of February...

Heavyweight v Jr Heavyweight

Image
Hi guys, I've been watching wrestling for around 3 and a half years but it wasn't until the Cruiserweight Classic where I started to become more aware about different divisions in different companies. For wrestlers under a specific weight limit, Cruiserweights is the term used by most companies for wrestlers but in Japan they're known as Junior heavyweights. Each company also has a different weight classification but that doesn't mean you're restricted to being a Jr/ Cruiserweight if you're under this limit as seen by Kota Ibushi, Young Bucks, Finn Balor etc - you just can't be part of the division if you're over. So, if that's the basics then why am I writing this post? It all links to something Marty Scurll said in the Best of Super Junior Conference in May (cast your little minds back): "I'm dedicated to making this junior division the best in the world. I hate the idea that this Jr division is less than and the fact that peo...

Power Struggle - Jr Tag League Teams Explained

Image
Hi guys, Another week, another NJPW post because tomorwas the start of Jr Tag League (Power Struggle). Even though I'm sad it doesn't seem as important as World Tag League (I mean it's not even classed as it's own product, not all of the shows are broadcasted live and have you seen the banner), I still  want to look specifically at all the teams and who might be the front runners instead of the whole tour card. Yoshinobu Kanemaru & El Desperado - Suzuki Gun Even though these two are Jr Tag Team Champions, they've not been the best of champs and we haven't really seen the belts elevated like it was on the Bucks. I know that they're major heels and winning by sneaky tactics is the go to, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be able to put on solid matches and defend the title more than once every few months. But, I think this tournament is the best way to show the fans that they are great wrestlers and are champs for a reason. The...

Fighting Spirit Unleashed/ King of Pro-Wrestling *spoilers*

Image
Hi guys, NJPW has been on a role since it's break from the G1 so this week's post is a hybrid of two NJPW show reviews. Because NJPW Fighting Spirit Uncleashed on 30th Sept (US time) was asamazing as was Monday's King of Pro-Wrestling, I thought I'd combine the two (also I didn't have much time the week of FSU). The lead up Fighting Spirit Unleashed wasn't too in your face during the Destruction tour but, as soon as the card was released, we had some crackers of matches. I've always loved the tag matches that start the NJPW shows and these were no different! I also can't forget the Tanahashi/Kushida v Jay/ Gedo match which was always going to be a favourite for me just because of the Wrestle Kingdom briefcase implications and of course, Jay White is probably my favourite wrestler at the moment. It was brutal, sneaky but with a perfect amount of pure wrestling. Of course Jay won with sneaky tactics but he's a heel so Gedo hitting Tana with ...
